irony

if there's one thing i've learned in my travels through motherhood, it's that it is filled with irony.
a bitter irony. (at least in this case.)

about two weeks ago, my sweet emaline decided to truly win my love over (as if she hasn't already) by sleeping through the night. and by sleeping through the night i mean, sleeping from 8:30pm-4am, eating and then right back to sleep for another 4-5 hours. it was too good to be true, she being only 5 weeks old and all, so i kept it to myself the first few nights, avoiding any possible jinx. now, before any of my readers roll their eyes or get sick from me talking about my wonderful perfect baby... read on, friends, read on.

after about a week of me enjoying my much needed beauty rest, ava came down with a cold and began waking almost every hour for 5 nights straight. so while, emaline was sleeping the night away, ava was miserable in bed with high fevers, calling out to me to rush to her aid. i couldn't wait for the weekend, when bryce would finally be home to help and i could catch up on some rest. but alas, friday came along and i was miserable and shivering under my blankets with a fever of my own. the good news was that ava had begun to feel better and was sleeping through the night once again. the bad news- now i was sick and unable to sleep through the night due to the uncomfortable achiness from my fever.

the timing of this all was terrible, the first week ava had to miss one of her swim lessons due to her illness, and we had to cancel two playdates with friends. the weekend i got sick i missed out on dinner with our friends one night and catan with the girls another night. to top it all off, we had also planned to bless emaline on sunday. (now, i realize that this doesn't really fall into the category of irony, rather bad luck, which reminds me of that i love the 90's episode where they talk about alanis morissette's song ironic and how most of what she sings about isn't irony but just bad luck. but then at the end they point out that the irony of it all was that she named a song ironic which turned out to not even be about irony at all... it's kinda like that.) anyways.... by sunday morning, i felt much better than the night before, so we went ahead with the blessing. besides having to remind the presiding member of the bishopric that we were supposed to bless her, after he had already forgotten and proceeded with the rest of the meeting, everything went well. bryce gave her a wonderful blessing and everything seemed to be finally getting back to normal. until... last night around midnight when emaline woke up screaming at the top of her lungs. something very uncharacteristic of her. uh-huh, emaline caught what ever ava and i had and was up all night, waking every 30-45 minutes screaming. she would only sleep when i held her up against me, so i held her all night. from midnight 'til 7:30am. needless to say, my back is sore and myself- exhausted. i'm still awaiting the results of her bloodtest to find out if she needs antibiotics or if we just need to wait out a virus. unfortunately, because she is so young, they don't want me to relieve her fever and discomfort with any tylenol, her fever just has to run its course.

i guess it's another sleepless week for me....

ahhh, motherhood.

Well I am glad that you got those couple nights of good rest before the storm hit! That is an amazing sleep schedule, I hope you can get her back on it! So Sorry about all the sickness! Now Bryce just has to get it, and it will be worse then any of the rest of you being sick, well atleast that's how it is at my house :)

that is terrible, and you can't even give her anything! i would feel so helpless. it's better that they got it one at a time though. i know it can be hard to see that as a good thing, but imagine how hard it would be to want to comfort both of them in the middle of the night and know that you couldn't.

here's to better health and sleep filled nights

oh you poor thing! and you think that you would not have to worry about babies getting sick like that in the middle of July. yucky! hope it starts to get back to sleeping through the night soon nothing better then waking up thinking that it is 3am and realizing that it is 6am!

that is a little too ironic. yeah i really do think.

2 kids are fun, right? i'm just holding on until they're old enough to take care of themselves. so needy.

thank you i really needed that. i've had this nagging thought that were maybe not done having kids. but that was when i was away from them. after being home 30 min and reading your lovely post reminded me, i'm already way in over my head.
kayleen - they do actually start taking care of themselves. hold out, it'll come.

Bummer Diana! I am a little scared for two... I hope you all get better soon!

To answer your glazing/painting question. At Lowes they have pre-mixed colors but only a few options and I got a tan shade that gave the white a nice antique look. But at home depot they have colorless glaze that you can mix with any color of paint(it gives directions on the back). I painted something red recently and then mixed the colorless glaze with black paint to make a black glaze to go over the red.

Any hoo stuff turns out looking really awesome and the tecnique is really easy to do. Just kind of rub it on and off.

Man I'm so sorry Diana. I'd totally tell you that I could take Ava for a little while one day while you catch up on some sleep, but with being on bedrest and all its hard enough taking care of just Ty with Layn gone all the time.

Hang in there, it will get better. Reading your blog makes me so nervous and excited all at the same time to have another. I'm convinced that no one and nothing can ever prepare you for the challenges of motherhood, and sleep loss is one of those huge challenges!

The Irony for me came when just days after talking to you about you guys being sick, I came down with a bug too:( Don't worry I don't blame you, as far as I know germs can not be spread through the phone lines...(as far as I know....:)
After 2 days of lying in bed, am finally getting better now and I hope you and your crew are too!

Wait is that Irony? or is it just bad luck? (like having rain on your wedding day....which I never actually understood because I think that could be quite fun, depending on how you look at it):)
