cloudy

i love, love, love cloudy days. this morning i woke up to a nice dark overcast sky. could this mean that fall is finally approaching? i hope so, i don't think i can handle one more near 90 degree day, i mean next week is thanksgiving for pete's sake! (who is pete, btw?)

the other day bryce and i were talking about the new jimmy eat world album and how poppy it is.... very unlike the old j.e.w. days. however, i started thinking that those unfortunate people who only know jimmy for their bleed american album, might think that chase this light is a great album because that's the genre that they categorize jimmy in. unless you listened to jimmy in their static/clarity days, or even their earlier punk days, you wouldn't know the difference. i started thinking, what if i didn't know their earlier music background, would i think that their new album was good? are we not as pleased with it because we know what they're capable of? because let's be honest, although this album can't compare to their unique stylings in their earliest albums, there are far more worse bands being played on the radio, and i'd rather hear this than another social distortion song even if it is sub-par to their "good ol' days". (no offense to any social d fans out there.) just some food for thought. old and new jimmy fans i'd like to know what you think.

then this made me remember another conversation bryce and i had about other genres of music. in my life, i have gone through many music genre stages. i've stayed pretty mainstream but i have always hated country music... that is, until 10th grade when my bff annie made me listen to it and finally got me to start liking it. however, that phase quickly died off by 11th grade when i started listening more to punk rock. anyways, my point is that although i still don't really like country music, i still hold a special place in my heart for the songs that annie helped me grow to love in 10th grade and it doesn't stop there. music that if i heard today would hate, i love because at a certain time in my life it was my favorite song and for some reason, i can still enjoy it. for example, back in high school i loved blink 182, i can still listen to any of these songs without cringing even though tom delonge's back-ups are super nasally and the songs are quite a bit outdated now. however, if i had heard their music for the first time today, i would most likely hate it. how is this possible? how is it that i can get excited if i hear ace of base's "the sign" and am suddenly in 7th grade all over again? why do i still like this song even though i can't stand sheryl crow at all now. why can i listen to pearl jam without cringing even though eddie vedder totally sounds like, what bryce and i so lovingly call, "a man voice band". ("a man voice band" is any band/singer who reaches to the depths to sound like a big man with a bellowing voice... i.e. creed, nickelback... etc.) mandy, my apologies to blake, i know he once held pearl jam very close to his heart, but even he would probably admit that eddie vedder was the first of the "man voice bands"... we just didn't know it yet. and finally, why do i still love and know all the words to nkotb's "tonight"? (it does sound slightly beatles-ish doesn't it? my heart still beats for jordan.) bryce totally agrees and can still rock out when he hears zoinks or deftones. are we the only ones like this or are there others out there whose musical tastes have matured, yet their roots still run deep like ours?

**after watching all those videos i've just realized how old i am. wow.

Remember how mad Jim Adkins would get when the "old school" fans would only request Static songs at their shows? I just remember him getting so frustrated that we thought their new stuff was never as good as the old stuff.

I think that as long as your music taste continues to grow, it's ok to have your past favorites hold a dear place in your heart. You just don't want to get stuck ONLY in the past.

But I, too, LOVE 90s rock.

What about the music you were stuck listening to as a kid?
Not one single word on the music you grew up with could it be that music rocked?

I really like the new Jimmy album. I'm glad you do too.

Oh and overcast is the best. So sorry you guys have been experiencing 90 degree weather. That's the PITS... no pun intended.

Isn't the Pete in For Pete's Sake referring to Saint Peter? I think it's a minced oath for something more offensive. (Like you really even cared.)

I just have to say that I love music...all kinds of music. People can say that I have no musical taste, but I don't care. I like anything that puts me in a better mood, or makes me want to cry, or causes me to break out in dance.
From Bob Marley to Bob Dylan and from the Beach Boys to the Beastie Boys. Whether it be the Beatles, or the Bangles, the Black Eyed Peas or Blondie...The B52's, Bon Jovi, Ben Folds...I love it all!
(And no, I don't just love "B" bands...hahaha!)

I have heard the new Jimmy album and was quite surprised. I only heard it once through so I didn't have time to really analyze it, but there was this one song in particular...where the beginning was very "Queen" esque... do you know which one I am talking about? I don't know the title or number. Any who, I didn't love the album...but I definitely liked it. Most songs usually take more than once for me to love them though. I can most def appreciate their efforts to branch out however. You have to re-vamp your style at some point...not matter what you're re-vamping...whether its clothes or music or hair...and you take a risk in doing that, but thats what makes people exciting. So I give them props for that!

abbie... i totally forgot about jim getting bugged. i agree that one should remember their roots, but not get stuck in them.

melis... i guess my point wasn't really clear. what i was saying was that i'm not that keen on the new album, but when i listen to it without thinking that it's j.e.w. and comparing it to their early stuff, then i can give it more of a chance.

nicole... yes, i did really want to know who pete was. thanks for clarifying. who knew that there were so many great "b" bands.
